I WAS CALLED CUNNING BY A PROFESSOR ONCE, & TOOK IT AS A COMPLEMENT

THIRTEEN YEARS LATER I’M STILL CHALLENGING MY MANUFACTURERS TO CREATE THE VERY BEST FOR MY CLIENTS.

Sara Westman didn’t just fall into creative problem solving, she was raised in it. As a homeschooled kid with entrepreneurial parents, she learned early on that the best solutions often come from thinking a little sideways. That scrappy, make-it-work mindset stuck. When clients couldn’t quite picture what was possible, Sara didn’t just pitch concepts, she built them herself. That mix of imagination and execution became her signature, and over the last 13+ years, it’s helped her quietly reshape how technical illustration, branding, and product design show up in the firearms and defense industries.

Sara earned her degree in Graphic Design Technology at Pensacola State College, where she focused on vector illustration and commercial photography, two pillars that continue to shape her highly detailed, precision-focused style. After beginning her career in brand development, a personal weekend project involving a Rock Island 1911 accidentally launched her into technical illustration for the firearms industry. She began illustrating everyday carry artwork for friends and acquaintances, and thanks to a tight-knit firearms community (and a social media landscape without algorithmic constraints), she quickly learned that there was zero room for error. So she built her process around obsessive accuracy, deep mechanical understanding, and a commitment to excellence that has never wavered.

Since then, Sara has illustrated hundreds of firearms and accessories for industry clients, produced editorial visuals for Recoil magazine, and created high-detail merch that’s raised the bar for what’s possible in PVC patches. Her work has been featured by Forbes and, most notably, in a Supreme Court opinion in the 2024 Garland v. Cargill case, an honor that speaks volumes about both her credibility and the trust she’s earned among legal experts. Her War Blanket project, launched in 2021, blends product development, art, and emotional storytelling in a way that encapsulates her entire career: meaningful, meticulous, and built to last.

Today, Sara continues to lead Kitfox Design Group with a no-nonsense blend of kindness and conviction. She’s not just a designer, she’s a translator of technical information, a mentor for emerging brands, and a relentless advocate for clarity and craftsmanship in every form.
